Tips from NWS on beating the heat:

Drink plenty of fluids.

Stay in an air-conditioned room.

Stay out of the sun.

Check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

Heat kills by pushing the human body beyond its limits. In extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.

Most heat disorders occur because the victim has been overexposed to heat or has over-exercised for their age and physical condition. Older adults, young children, people with disabilities, and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to succumb to extreme heat. People working outside are at a greater risk as well.
