Center for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Adjusting to the birth of a baby may be challenging. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) such as postpartum anxiety (PPA) and postpartum depression (PPD) affect 1 in 5 women with symptoms that range from mild to severe. It is the most common complication of childbirth, but it is temporary and treatable.

If you are pregnant or recently had a baby and are experiencing any of the below symptoms for more than two weeks, please call us at 862-781-3755.

  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Anxiety all or most of the time or panic attacks
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or shame
  • Sadness/crying frequently
  • Loss of pleasure/interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Obsessive, racing, scary thoughts
  • Excessive irritability, anger or rage

Fear of being left alone with the baby, or that you are not a good enough mother

The Center for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, part of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, treats women and families who are pregnant, postpartum struggling from infertility, or who are coping with the loss of a baby.

Our treatment program includes evidence-based psychotherapy, support groups and medication management as well as complimentary therapies such as infant massage and Mommy & Me music classes to encourage bonding in a safe, judgement free space.

Patients are supported through a multidisciplinary team of maternal mental health experts from psychiatry, nursing and social work.

All of our clinicians are certified in perinatal mental health by Postpartum Support International.

PMAD Treatment

We know that the best treatment for postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety is delivered through a combination of approaches. This may include individual therapy, medication, support group therapy or all three.

We also offer a private Facebook community dedicated to our PMAD population that provides a peer-to-peer support system.

Most insurance plans cover these appointments, although a copayment may be required. We offer treatment up until 1 year postpartum.
