PRO BONO Services: Pro bono is a Latin phrase meaning “for the public good.” In modern usage, it refers to professional work done voluntarily and without payment, especially in fields like law, medicine, or consulting.  This is an ongoing list of organizations in New Jersey that may have pro-bono legal services.

Foreclosure Resources

NJHMFA Foreclosure Mediation: If you are a homeowner facing foreclosure, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency connects you with free housing counselors to help you navigate court mediation and save your home. 

National Pro Bono Resources

  • LawHelp.org: This national directory allows you to find free legal aid programs in your specific state, access self-help guides (such as eviction and debt collection), and use interactive forms. 
  • ABA Free Legal Answers: Managed by the American Bar Association (ABA), this is an online pro bono program where qualifying low-income individuals can post civil legal questions and have volunteer attorneys provide answers for free. 
  • Legal Services Corporation (LSC): LSC is the single largest funder of civil legal aid in the country. Their site features a nationwide directory to find LSC-funded legal aid organizations serving your local community.
  • Military Pro Bono Project: This American Bar Association-managed program accepts referrals from military Judge Advocates and connects active-duty service members facing civil legal issues with volunteer attorneys. 
  • National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP): An independent, nonprofit organization that ensures veterans and their dependents receive the federal benefits they are entitled to. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
