The New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired is headquartered at 153 Halsey Street, Newark. The headquarters include the office of the Executive Director, Human Resources, Fiscal and Management Operations and the Coordinators of direct service delivery disciplines. The Central Regional Office is located at 100 Daniels Way, Freehold. The regional office provides direct service delivery of our educational, vocational rehabilitation, and independent living services for the Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, and Union counties.
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES: Educational Services are provided from birth through 21 years of age to eligible children and their families. These services are designed to allow students who are blind or vision impaired to participate equally with their sighted peers in classroom activities.
VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION: Provides training and counseling specifically designed to assist individuals who are blind, deafblind, or visually impaired to prepare for, secure, retain, or advance in employment that is consistent with their strengths, skills, and interests.
INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS: Provides training designed to help people of any age who are blind, deafblind, or visually impaired to adjust to their vision loss and gain the skills of daily living that they need to lead a full and productive life. Services include in-home instruction in the areas of daily living activities and home management; orientation and safe independent travel within the home, community, work, and school environment; childcare training; training in braille, cell phone usage, and other communication methods; eye health education; low vision services and referral to community resources.
EYE HEALTH SERVICES: CBVI’s Project BEST program works to save sight and restore vision whenever it is medically possible. Services include a mobile eye examination unit providing vision screenings for preschool and school-age children, monthly or semi-monthly eye screenings at more than 28 fixed sites all over the state, on-site screenings at institutions and in communities, special diabetic detection and awareness programs, and other specialized eye screening programs which target historically underserved populations (i.e. minorities, the elderly, migrant farm workers, etc.)
ADDITIONAL SERVICES: services for people who are deafblind; business and entrepreneurial training; educational materials for visually impaired children; income tax certification letters; referral to community-based programs and services; and low and high technical aids and appliances for people with low vision.
| Eligibility | CBVI services and programs are available to all eligible vision impaired NJ residents without regard to other disabling condition, sex, age, race, nationality, or religious and cultural orientation. A person may be eligible for services if he or she is experiencing a vision impairment that is affecting their normal daily life activities. |
