Clean Ocean Action (COA) is a leading environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting waterways through science, research, education, advocacy, and citizen action. A cornerstone of COA’s educational outreach is the Student Environmental Advocates and Leaders (SEAL) program, which empowers high school students to become informed, effective leaders on local environmental issues. Through bi-monthly training sessions, students collaborate with peers across Monmouth County while learning about topics such as environmental justice, water quality, civic engagement, recycling, watershed stewardship, and environmental careers. Guided by experts, elected officials, advocates, and activists, participants gain hands-on experience in grassroots organizing, advocacy, and problem-solving. Students apply their knowledge through community-based environmental projects, earn recognition through a leadership point system, and extend their impact by sharing their experiences with middle school students, local officials, and community groups.
