March 2026 Proclaimed Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in New Jersey
Governor Mikie Sherrill has officially declared March to be Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in NJ, recognizing the importance of inclusion, support, and community partnership for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The proclamation highlights that developmental disabilities begin before age 22 and often require lifelong supports to ensure full participation in community life. In New Jersey, multiple state departments — including Human Services, Health, Education, and Children and Families — work alongside hundreds of partner organizations to provide essential services.
More than 38,000 direct-support professionals and self-directed employees across the state play a vital role in helping individuals live independently, participate in employment and day programs, and thrive in group homes, supervised apartments, and family settings.
The proclamation also acknowledges the state’s commitment to expanding community living and employment opportunities through programs such as the Community Care Program and the Supports Program, which serve adults aged 21 and older.
New Jersey’s service system continues to grow through strong collaboration among individuals with disabilities, families, advocates, service providers, and state leadership — all working together to ensure that people with developmental disabilities have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.
