Summer EBT is coming to NJ this June!

In summer 2024, New Jersey will launch Summer EBT, a new-to-NJ child nutrition program intended to reduce hunger and food insecurity for children when school is not in session. Families will receive $120 per eligible child for the summer. Benefits can be used at authorized retailers, anywhere SNAP/EBT is accepted.

Summer EBT is a proven game-changer in the fight against child hunger. Research shows that providing families with summer grocery benefits reduces child hunger and supports healthier diets.

Most families will get these benefits automatically, but some parents will need to apply. The new program is in addition to free meals that kids of all ages can get at summer meal sites in their communities.

Additionally, eligibility for Summer EBT may be established in several other ways.  In NJ, your child is eligible to receive a Summer EBT card if your child’s school participates in the National School Lunch Program AND:

  • Your child receives free meals at school AND your household income is at or under 185% of the 2023-2024 federal poverty level (see table below); or
  • You applied for School Meals through your school district AND your household income is at or under 185% of the 2023-2024 federal poverty level (see table below); or
  • Your household participates in SNAP or TANF; or
  • Your child is experiencing homelessness, a migrant, or in foster care; or
  • Your child attends a Head Start program administered by the school district.
  • If your child’s school does not participate in the National School Lunch Program, they may still be eligible for Summer EBT if your household participates in SNAP or TANF or your child is in foster care.

You are encouraged to submit a School Meals Application no later than April 19, 2024 to see if you qualify for the federal Summer EBT benefit prior to the start of summer. Online applications can be found on your school district's website.
