Freehold Intergenerational Community Kitchen

On August 15th 2022, 17 diverse members of the Freehold community attended the Intergenerational Community Kitchen interest meeting held by NCTH’s FICC, where they learned about the project and set goals for themselves. After the meeting, all 17 people decided that they wanted to become members of the Intergenerational Community Kitchen.

Since then, the group has gathered twice monthly to learn how to prepare healthy, tasty, and nutritious meals on a budget. Each member goes home with four meals at the end of cooking sessions. The Community Kitchen is a place where members bond across age and culture through the shared interests of cooking and learning.

The kitchen is participatory, not passive, which leads to the empowerment of the members. It also builds resilience rather than dependency on emergency food relief. This model is a proven success for helping people connect with one another and improving overall health.

Current funding for the Freehold Intergenerational Community Kitchen will end in January of 2023. We do not want to see this program end - there is still so much impact to be made in the Freehold community! Money raised through this fundraiser will sustain this program into 2023, where we hope to reach more people. Specifically, funds raised will go towards:

• Groceries to be cooked at the sessions

• Cooking supplies such as cutting boards, aprons, etc.

• Educational materials

• Stipends for program facilitators and nutrition/cooking experts

As a byproduct, money donated will provide the following opportunities to Freehold area residents:

• Learn how to prepare healthy, tasty, and nutritious meals on a budget

• Develop food knowledge and cooking skills

• Become more skilled in budgeting and shopping

• Learn how to reduce food waste

• Learn how to read food labels

• Build confidence in cooking/kitchen skills

• Cook in a safe social atmosphere and meet new friends!

We appreciate any support you can provide to help us continue our Intergenerational Community Kitchen and other FICC projects. If you cannot donate monetarily, please help by sharing our fundraiser!
