Kinship Navigator Program (Children's Home Society of New Jersey)

CHSofNJ delivers the New Jersey Kinship Navigator (Wraparound and Kinship Legal Guardian) Services in seven counties (Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Hunterdon, Somerset, Ocean and Union.).  We enrich these services with Kinship Cares Enhanced Program services and at neighborhood Family Success Centers.

For Kinship Navigator Program, the kinship caregivers are adults who are raising relatives' children in their own homes and, as such, may qualify for wraparound services, which provide financial assistance to offset the costs of raising their kin children by providing expenses such as furniture, clothing, special activities, camp, and some emergency monies.

To qualify for these services, kinship caregivers must prove they are relatives or legal guardians of the children and that the children live with them without their biological parent(s). Financial eligibility depends on the size and income of the family unit. Caregivers must show proof of relationship, income, and residency of the child ; families cannot be active with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

The caregivers can apply yearly until the child turns 18 years of age. Kinship Navigator also provides Information and Referral service at any time to kin caregivers.

The Kinship Navigator Program was created to help caregivers “navigate” their way through government programs and to find local support and resources. The Kinship Navigator Program can provide information and referral for a wide range of needs including:

  • Family Support Groups
  • Work First New Jersey / Temporary Assistance to Needy Families
  • Medicaid Coverage and Services
  • Child Support
  • Housing Assistance
  • Custody Procedure and Other Legal Services
  • Child Care Resources
  • Educational Issues
