PFLAG Monmouth County Support Meeting

Starting Monday, September 14, 2009, the MONMOUTH COUNTY SUPPORT MEETING will be held on the second Monday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Church House of the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury, 352 Sycamore Ave, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702 (Directions).

The OCEAN COUNTY SUPPORT MEETING will continue to be held on the second Wednesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the United Church of Christ of Toms River, 1681 Ridgeway Rd. (Route 571), Toms River, NJ 08757 (Directions).

Although the groups meet in a church building, it is not affiliated with any religious organization. At our meetings, we hope to provide a safe, confidential and supportive environment in which to discuss personal issues with other people who struggle with similar questions. Every other month or so, we provide a short presentation by a guest speaker or short video.

Our guidelines provide for:

  • anonymity (no one need reveal their last name to the group)
  • confidentiality (what is said in the group stays in the group)
  • supportive listening (that is, listening with empathy and without judgment).

The format consists of three parts:

  • Check-in (your first name, why you are here, and how you are doing)
  • Short presentation, support and/or topic groups
  • Refreshments and social time

Please contact us for further information and encouragement.

Our mission is to promote the health and well-being of GBLTIQ persons, their families and friends through SUPPORT, to cope with an adverse society; EDUCATION, to enlighten an ill-informed public; ADVOCACY, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. We seek to provide opportunities for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and to act to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

  • Do you have a family member who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed or questioning?
  • Do you count them among your friends or co-workers?
  • Would you like to develop a better understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or other GLBTIQ issues?
  • Are you a GLBTIQ person who needs help with the 'coming out' process or other issues?
  • Would you like to offer support to members of the GLBTIQ community and their family and friends?

Jersey Shore PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) was formed in 2004 by a group of concerned Ocean County citizens, but is open to anyone who supports our mission. We are a non-profit organization affiliated with the PFLAG national office and over 500 chapters across the country.
