Sierra House Reopens The Sierra House Transitional Program for Homeless Youth & Young Mothers

East Orange, NJ (September 2017) - Sierra House is proud to announce the reopening of the Sierra House Transitional Program on September 1, 2017. Founded in 2002, the Sierra House Transitional Program is an award-winning program for homeless youth and young mothers' ages 18 to 25 years old and their children. The new facility is located at 85-89 North 14th Street in East Orange, the former location of Isaiah House's Teen MAP Program.

"As promised, Sierra House will continue to provide aging-out and homeless young women with the opportunity to build better lives," says Keely Freeman, executive director. "The Sierra House Transitional Program is unique and much more than a bed and a meal for the night; it provides other necessities, such as one-on-one counseling and extensive support services that will enable young women to successfully get back on their feet and break the cycle of homelessness."

In addition to the many services offered in the nearly 10,000-square-foot facility, Sierra House will provide individuals with a range of in-house activities ranging from life coaching to gardening, and much more. The program is also linked to other programs in the community so that residents receive health care and other essential services during their participation in the program. "By providing this valuable resource, individuals will have the support they need to end their homelessness," says Shahilda Boynes, Program Director.

Since its inception, Sierra House has served more than 300 homeless individuals and families and has more than an 80% success rate. This means 80% of the individuals and families that Sierra House serves successfully transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency, 70% get jobs, and more than half enroll in higher education programs. "Seeing this dynamic new program become a reality is truly gratifying," expressed Bill Hunter, a long-time resident of East Orange.
